MARK-IT: Future Commissions

MARK-IT Future Commissions

Beast Market on New Road

The Society has applied for funding to the Spalding Neighbourhood Board to complete the Spalding MARK-IT Trail.

Our ambition is to change the way people feel and speak about the town, cultivating pride of place and in the area’s distinct history and important contribution to the nation’s food and agriculture sectors today. We hope that it will help local people to reconnect with the heritage of the town, and for newcomers to better understand the reasons why the town is now a major centre of food production.

We hope that this high-profile trail will also help to better showcase the area by increasing national recognition of the important role that the agricultural and food processing industries in the South Holland area play in providing security to the nation’s basic food needs in a sustainable way.

We aim to install high-quality public realm artworks that will mark the remaining elements of Spalding’s weekly livestock markets that took place on the streets of Spalding, by commissioning artworks in the following locations:-

  • New Road – Horses
  • Red Lion Street – Pigs
  • Sheepmarket – Poultry
  • Buttermarket – Dairy Produce
  • Signature piece in Market Place or Hall Place
  • Signature piece at Springfields
The aim of the signature piece at Springfields is to promote the trail to the two million annual visitors to the retail outlet, and to encourage them to consider exploring Spalding Town centre to see the rest of the trail and to explore the other attractions in the town.
If you would like to support our ambition to complete what will be a unique high-quality arts trail and a visitor attraction in its own right, then we would love to hear from you.

Do you have memories or photographs of the horse sales that took part in New Road? Or maybe you have information about the hogmarket,on Red Lion Street marked on the 1732 Grundy map of Spalding? Perhaps you have memories of the poultry and dairy produce sales that took place in the town. We would love to hear from you.

Do you have an interest in discovering more about the history of the area through researching historical newspaper archives? Your support could help unearth new material.

Are you a creative who could help us tell the story of Spalding's historic markets in new and novel ways? We would be interested in hearing your ideas.

Would you be willing to support our ambition for the trail by making a donation. All donations will be gratefully received.
